This flower is between 50 and 90 cm wide.  It smells like rotten meat to attract flies for pollination.

UBC's Biology Program is the undergraduate teaching program of the Departments of Botany and Zoology. Options include one Major, two Combined Majors, eight Honours, and three Combined Honours options.

Important Announcements:

  • Applications for Admission to Third Year Biology Majors or Honours:  closed until January 2016!  If you have any questions or problems with your application please contact the Biology Office at tromba@biology.ubc.ca.

  • Biology students are only permitted to take two biology laboratory course selections (i.e. BIOL 326, 337, 340, 341, 351, 352, 363, 404, 408, 409, 437 or 444).  However, special permission may be obtained to take more.

  • Faculty of Science promotion requirements.

  • Office Hours for Shona Ellis, Associate Head of Biology: Room 2521 BioSci Bldg, Tuesdays 11:30am - 12:30pm & Fridays 12 - 1pm  

  • Blocked Courses/ Wait-lists:  When a course is blocked from registration there is a wait-list to get into that course.    The wait-list will have a "W" in the section number like 1W1 or 2W1.  Please register yourself on the wait-list for a chance to get into the course.   Most course wait-lists are managed on a first come first served basis.   Please DO NOT email course instructors about blocked courses or wait-list, as course registrations are managed by the Biology Office or course coordinators.  If you have any questions about blocked courses or wait-lists please contact the Biology Office.

  • Course Conflicts: Students may not register themselves into conflicting course activities and students may only register for one section of a course not multiple.  Students may be removed from wait-lists if they are registered in a conflicting course activity.
